Wie ist die Situation heute? Auch heutzutage erregt man noch ziemlich viel Aufsehen, wenn man mit einem Irish Wolfhund durch eine Innenstadt spazieren geht. Auch auf Ausstellungen kommt man immer wieder mit Menschen ins Gesprфch, die sich nach dieser wundervollen Rasse erkundigen. Mit anderen Worten - auch heute noch ist es etwas ganz Besonderes, nichts Alltфgliches, einen, geschweige denn mehrere, Irish Wolfhund an der Leine zu halten. Aber, wie ging es nach dem ersten Import mit der Zucht in Deutschland weiter? Der erste Wurf fiel 1910, und spфter, 1912, fiel ein weiterer Wurf. Danach wurde es wieder leise um den Wolfhund. Wir kіnnen davon ausgehen, dass nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg ќberhaupt kein Wolfhund mehr in Deutschland lebte. Und es sollten Jahrzehnte vergehen, bis schlieпlich wieder ein Wolfhund den Weg nach Deutschland finden wќrde. Das geschah nфmlich erst im Jahre 1957. Jedoch konnte man auch jetzt nicht von Zucht sprechen, denn wieder vergingen viele Jahre, bis man hier in Deutschland auf den Geschmack der Rasse gekommen war. 1967 wurden weitere Wolfhunde nach Deutschland geholt. You could almost say it was really spectacular, because even the press could not pass up the opportunity to report on the occurrence with articles and pictures. That was back in the year 1908. How does the situation look today? Even in this day and age one would capture a fair measure of attention if one were to take a walk through a crowded downtown street with an Irish Wolfhound on a leash. At dog shows, people regularly begin discussions about this magnificent breed. In other words, it is still something very special today, something extraordinary, to be seen with a  or even better, several  Irish Wolfhounds at your side. How was it back then, though? What were the breeding practices in Germany just after the first dogs were imported? The first litter was born in Germany in 1910 and shortly afterwards, in 1911, the second family of puppies appeared. Then began a period during which interest in the Irish Wolfhound waned. We assume today that not a single Irish Wolfhound lived in Germany immediately following World War I. Decades would pass before the next Wolfhound would find its way to Germany. That didn t happen until 1957! But even then it would have been premature to speak about continuous breeding, because many years would pass again before dog-lovers would once again gain interest in the breed of dog. In 1967 several Wolfhounds were brought into Germany. Ob man sich zu jener Zeit ќberhaupt vorstellen konntet, dass der Wolfhund jemals eine so groпe Beliebtheit erfahren wќrde wie heute? Einige der Zќchter der ersten Stunde sind der Rasse und ihrer Zucht treu geblieben. Damals wie heute liest man ihre Namen in den Katalogen der Ausstellungen. Stellvertretend fќr diese Zќchter mіchte ich hier zwei Namen nennen, nфmlich Susanne Ottofќlling (Zwinger  vom Welzerberg) und die Herren Papenfuп und Rіsner (Zwinger  von der Oelmќhle"). Andere haben nach jahrelanger und erfolgreicher Zucht aufgehіrt zu zќchten, und dennoch kann man die Namen dieser erfolgreichen Zќchter und ihrer Hunde noch in vielen Ahnentafeln entdecken, In den letzten Jahren erfreut sich das Coursing, als Hundesport, immer grіпerer Beliebtheit. Kіnnen Sie mir glauben, dass es ein ausgesprochener Genuss ist, gut trainierten Irish Wolfhunde bei dieser Arbeit zuzu-sehen? Es spricht viel fќr den Charakter unserer Rasse, wenn es am Ziel nie zu Streit kommt! In der Tat, ein sauberer Lauf ist ein wirklicher Hochgenuss. Heute ist der Irish Wolfhund in Deutschland eine bekannte und geschфtzte Rasse. Er gehіrt zahlen-mфпig mit zu den beliebtesten Windhundrassen im DWZRV. Mit 410 Welpen in 2004 liegen die Wolfhunde auf dem 2. Platz nach den Whippefs (429 Welpen in 2004). It is hard to imagine that breeders then would ever envision the boom in the popularity we see today for this race. Several of the early breeders have remained faithful to this breed of dog. You can find their names in the breeder s catalogs from back then and today alike. Representative of these breeders, I would like to mention a few names here: Susanne Ottofuelling ( Von Welzerberg Kennels ) and Mr. Papenfuss and Mr. Roesner (both from the  Von der Oelmuehle Kennels ). Other breeders, after years of successful activities, have given up their breeding practices. Today the Irish Wolfhound is a well-known and valued breed of dog in Germany.
